But what struggles did he face in life growing up? Let's see in this post. Our story begins on October 7th 1983 in the town of Santa Cruz in Trinidad and Tobago where John Bravo and Joycelyn Bravo gave birth to a beautiful boy whom they named Dwayne John Bravo.

Family of Bravo :

He has four sisters and one half-brother who is also, a popular cricketer named Darren Bravo. His parents were huge cricket fans which made his sisters involved in watching the sport and finally himself and Darren Bravo too. Brian Lara who also belonged to the same town where his family lived.

Student Life of Bravo :

After taking Lara as his inspiration, DJ Bravo studied in a local government school named Tranquility Government Secondary in Port of Spain where Cricket was not popular, yet was enjoying his childhood days playing the sport. He then studied in Harvard Coaching Clinic.

He wanted to take cricket as a career and not just as a hobby and since he used to play cricket in beaches, his body too was fit and athletic. His catches as a result of his athletic and flexible body was what impressed his college coaches first.

Cricket Journey of DJ Bravo :

Then he started imitating the shots of his idol Brian Lara during matches and gained popularity in his college. Soon in 2002 he was selected to play for Trinidad and Tobago. After scoring a century in just a few games he was selected to play for West Indies A team.

But he was selected only as a Batsman. His All-rounder skills came to the limelight in a match in 2003 where he hit a century and took 6 wickets in the same match. Within a year, he made his ODI debut on 18th of April 2004 against England. And his Test debut on 22nd July of the same year against the same team.

In his Test Debut, he scored 44 runs and scalped three wickets in the same match. With a 77-run knock and a six-wicket haul in the next match, he cemented his position as an all-rounder. He made crucial performances now and then.

But his most important knock came against Australia in the 2nd test in 2005 at Hobart, Australia. Where he played a knock of 113 against the line-up consisting of Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. Later he made his T20I debut against New Zealand on 16th of February 2006

In the 2006 Champions Trophy where he scalped 7 wickets at an average of 27.57 and scored 164 runs at an average of 41. He also scored his first century scoring a majestic 112* along with a second wicket stand of 174 with Chris Gayle.

Spot in World Cup :

Apart from Batting, Bowling and Fielding, another hidden talent came to be known by the public. Bravo acted as an emergency wicket- keeper in place of Dinesh Ramdin. Who had gone off for treatment after being hit on the head with the ball. Soon he secured a spot in the West Indies squad for the 2007 World Cup.

In the 2008 IPL Auctions where Mumbai Indians purchased him. But was unable to play as he had other International fixtures. In two shakes of a lamb's tail came the 2009 T20 world cup where Bravo gave amazing performances. Especially against India at Lords where his four-wicket hall restricted India to a considerable score of 153. With his 66 runs off 36 balls, he pushed the Windies to a seven wicket victory over India.

IPL Journey of Bravo :

Shortly he was released by MI in the IPL and his new franchise was Chennai Super Kings. 2012 IPL was a breakthrough season for him as he was one of the top performing players of CSK as he scored 461 runs at an average of 57 with a Strike Rate of 178.

Following this he was named in the West Indies squad for the 2012 T20 World Cup which was dominated by the West Indies who also were crowned the champions.

The next edition of IPL began after Bravo played few International Series and Bravo was at his peak form. Taking 32 wickets at an average of 9.15 to win the Purple Cap and overthrow Albie Morkel to become CSK's leading wicket taker.

Controversy As a Captain :

He then led his national side during the 2014 which got Bravo into a huge controversy. The reason being, West Indies went back home due to financial concerns and low salary pay of the cricketers during the middle of the series with two ODIs and three T20Is left.

This escalated into a controversy when BCCI asked the West Indies Cricket Board for a compensation of 40 million USDs Here, the West Indies Cricket Board blamed DJ Bravo as the person who made low salaries as an issue among the players and provoked it as a controversy

No wonder his captaincy turned into a big question mark leading to Darren Sammy replacing him as the captain. DJ Bravo then started playing local T20 tournaments from IPL, BBL, CPL, NatWest T20 Blast, PSL, BPL etc. He was later omitted from the West Indies World Cup squad for the 2015 World Cup.

T20 World Cup Winning :

But he made a strong comeback in 2016 T20 world cup where West Indies thrashed England, Sri Lanka and South Africa to enter into the semi-finals. After chasing a huge target of 193 against India in the semis, West Indies advanced into the big finals where they locked horns with England.

Hidden Talent of Bravo :

After winning this match from nowhere, Windies became the only team in history to win two T20 world cups. He later released a song that year named Champion dedicated to his national team. Others in the list include Asia dedicated to South Asian nations Chalo Chalo featuring Nisha B.

We are the Kings dedicated to CSK. Run D World, Land of the Champions dedicated to his CPL team Trinbago Knight Riders. Helicopter 7 dedicated to his brother from another mother (MSD) for his birthday. He has also featured in the opening ceremony of 2016 IPL along with actor Ranveer Singh, actresses Katrina Kaif and Jacqueline Fernandez. He has also featured in 'The Chamiya Song' and Tamil movie 'Chithiram Pesuthadi'.

Franchises Carrier :

Coming back to cricket, CSK bought him in the 2011 auctions and under the leadership of Dhoni, he earned the fame and reputation of being the world's best death bowler. After winning the purple cap for taking the most wickets (in the season twice) in 2013 and 2015.

CSK was suspended for two seasons due to illegal betting by the owner So, he was picked up by Gujarat Lions for the two seasons. Upon the end of CSK's ban the auctions were held again in 2018. Here after Mumbai Indians and Kings 11 Punjab bidding aggressively for him, KXIP bought him for 6.4 crore INR.

But the happiness of the KXIP Auction Committee didn't last long as CSK used their right to match card to buy him back Here, he performed amazingly good in the 1st match when CSK were in a tough situation and everyone lost hope. Down came bravo to save the team. With a knock of 68 of just 30 balls including three fours and seven sixes, he was named the Man of the Match.

Next, he played some crucial knocks in the next few editions of IPL. Apart from IPL, he plays for several other franchises around the globe. He has been a part of Caribbean Premier League's most successful team namely Trinbago Knight Riders ever since the beginning of the tournament in 2013.

Next in Big Bash League for Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars. In Pakistan Super League, he has played for Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. In Bangladesh Premier League he represented Chittagong Vikings, Dhaka Dynamites and Comilla Victorians.

He has also played for Kent, Essex, Middlesex and Surrey. In October 2018 he was named in Paarl Rocks squad for the first edition of the Mzanzi Super League T20. He was the joint leading wicket taker for the team in the tournament with 10 dismissals in six matches.

Retirement of DJ Bravo :

On January 31, 2015 Bravo announced his retirement from test cricket. In October 2018, he announced his retirement from International Cricket in all formats but will continue to play Franchise T20 cricket.

But in December 2019, Bravo made a comeback from retirement in preparation for the 2020 T20 World Cup Focusing on his personal life, he married a successful model and entrepreneur Regina Ramjit. And is a father of a beautiful daughter Dwaynice and son Dwayne Bravo Jr.
